Dr. Shuaibing Zhang is the group leader of Zhang Lab at School of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, China Pharmaceutical University. His research focuses on natural product discovery, microbial interactions, biosynthesis, and chemical biology.
Biography
Dr. Shuaibing Zhang, selected for the National High-Level Overseas Talents Youth Program (2025) and the Jiangsu Distinguished Professor Program (2025),has been a Professor at the School of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, China Pharmaceutical University, since April 2026. He earned his B.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Science from Hebei University (2010–2014) and an M.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry from the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jikai Liu (2014–2017). From 2018 to 2022, he pursued his Ph.D. in Paleobiotechnology at the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) in Jena, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Pierre Stallforth. His doctoral thesis was graded summa cum laude (1.0) and received the VAAM PhD Award, ranking among the top four biology doctoral theses in Germany. It also earned the PhD Award from the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, placing it as the top thesis in the faculty. He then continued as a postdoctoral researcher in the same group from September 2022 to the end of 2025. Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on natural product discovery, the ecological functions of natural products in microbial predator–prey associations, the molecular basis of amoeba–bacterium interactions, enzyme catalysis, and the interactions between traditional Chinese herbs and their associated microbes. His work has been published in high-impact journals including Cell, PNAS, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, and the Journal of the American Chemical Society. In 2022, he received the PNAS Cozzarelli Prize for the top paper in Biomedical Sciences. He is also a multiple recipient of the German medac Research Award (2020, 2022, 2024, 2026) and was awarded the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad in 2021.
